Muddy River Origin
Jamaica Pond is the source of the Muddy River and is about 68 acres in size.
Jamaica Pond is the largest body of fresh water in Boston proper.
The word Jamaica is believed to be from the Algonquin word for or related to ‘beavers’.
In 1874 it’s believed that up to 5,000 tons of ice were taken from Jamaica Pond each day by the Jamaica Plain Ice Company!
